Malibu (rum)
A flavored rum-based liqueur
Malibu is a brand of flavored rum made with natural coconut extract, produced by Pernod Ricard. It is known for its sweet, coconut flavor and is often used in tropical cocktails.
History[edit]
Malibu was originally created in 1978 as a way to simplify the making of the popular piña colada cocktail. The brand was first produced in Curacao, but production later moved to Barbados, where it is distilled from molasses and blended with coconut extract.
Production[edit]
Malibu is made by distilling molasses, a byproduct of sugarcane processing. The distillation process takes place in Barbados, where the rum is aged in oak barrels for a short period. After aging, the rum is blended with coconut extract to create its signature flavor.
Flavors[edit]
While the original Malibu is coconut-flavored, the brand has expanded its range to include several other flavors, such as:
- Malibu Pineapple
- Malibu Mango
- Malibu Passion Fruit
- Malibu Lime
These flavored variants are often used in a variety of cocktails and mixed drinks.
Cocktails[edit]
Malibu is a popular ingredient in many tropical cocktails. Some of the most well-known cocktails that feature Malibu include:
- Piña colada
- Malibu Bay Breeze
- Malibu Sunrise
- Coconut Mojito
Marketing[edit]
Malibu is marketed as a fun, tropical drink that embodies the spirit of summer and beach life. Its advertising campaigns often feature beach scenes and emphasize the laid-back, carefree lifestyle associated with tropical destinations.
