The study of the science and technology of producing and using plants and animals for food, fiber, and fuel.

Agricultural science is a broad multidisciplinary field that encompasses the parts of exact, natural, economic, and social sciences that are used in the practice and understanding of agriculture. It includes the study of agronomy, horticulture, animal science, soil science, entomology, plant pathology, and agricultural engineering.

History

The history of agricultural science dates back to the early development of agriculture itself. Early agricultural practices were based on trial and error, but over time, systematic study and experimentation led to the development of more efficient and productive methods. The Green Revolution in the mid-20th century, led by figures such as Norman Borlaug, significantly increased agricultural productivity worldwide.

Branches of Agricultural Science

Agronomy

Agronomy is the science of soil management and crop production. It involves the study of plant genetics, plant physiology, meteorology, and soil science. Agronomists work to improve the quality and quantity of food produced by crops.

Horticulture

Horticulture is the branch of agriculture that deals with the art, science, technology, and business of growing plants. It includes the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs, sprouts, mushrooms, algae, flowers, seaweeds, and non-food crops such as grass and ornamental trees and plants.

Animal Science

Animal science is the study of the biology of animals that are under the control of humankind. It includes the study of animal breeding, genetics, nutrition, physiology, and management.

Soil Science

Soil science is the study of soil as a natural resource. It includes the study of soil formation, classification, and mapping; physical, chemical, biological, and fertility properties of soils; and these properties in relation to the use and management of soils.

Entomology

Entomology is the scientific study of insects, a branch of zoology. In agriculture, entomologists study the role of insects in crop production and pest management.

Plant Pathology

Plant pathology is the scientific study of plant diseases caused by pathogens and environmental conditions. Plant pathologists work to understand the mechanisms of disease development and to develop methods for disease control.

Agricultural Engineering

Agricultural engineering involves the application of engineering principles to agricultural production and processing. It includes the design of machinery, equipment, and structures used in farming.

Impact of Agricultural Science

Agricultural science has had a profound impact on the world by increasing food production, improving food security, and enhancing the sustainability of agricultural practices. The development of high-yield crop varieties, improved pest control methods, and advanced irrigation techniques are some of the contributions of agricultural science.
