Corporate headquarters of Apple Inc. in Cupertino, California
Apple Park is the corporate headquarters of Apple Inc., located in Cupertino, California. It was opened to employees in April 2017, while construction was still underway. The main building's scale and circular groundscraper design, by Norman Foster, have earned the structure a media nickname "the spaceship". The campus houses more than 12,000 employees in one central four-story circular building of approximately 2,800,000 square feet (260,000 m_).
Design and Construction
Apple Park was designed by Foster and Partners, led by architect Norman Foster. The design was inspired by the idea of a "landed spaceship" and features a circular building with a diameter of 1,512 feet (461 meters). The building is clad entirely in curved glass, and the inner courtyard features a large pond, walking trails, and an orchard.
The construction of Apple Park began in 2013 and was completed in 2017. The project was overseen by Apple's former Chief Design Officer, Jony Ive, and was one of the last major projects that Steve Jobs worked on before his death in 2011.
Sustainability
Apple Park is one of the most energy-efficient buildings in the world. It is powered by 100% renewable energy, including a 17-megawatt rooftop solar installation. The building is naturally ventilated and does not require air conditioning for nine months of the year. The campus also features a 100,000-square-foot (9,300 m_) fitness center for employees and a 1,000-seat auditorium known as the Steve Jobs Theater.
Facilities
The main building, also known as "The Ring," is the centerpiece of Apple Park. It includes office spaces, research and development facilities, and a café that can serve 15,000 lunches a day. The campus also includes the Steve Jobs Theater, a visitor center with an Apple Store and café open to the public, and a historic barn that was preserved and restored as part of the campus design.
Steve Jobs Theater
The Steve Jobs Theater is a 1,000-seat auditorium located on the Apple Park campus. It is used for product launches and press events. The theater is named in honor of Apple's co-founder, Steve Jobs, and features a 165-foot (50-meter) diameter glass cylinder that supports a carbon-fiber roof.
Visitor Center
The Apple Park Visitor Center is open to the public and includes an Apple Store, a café, and an observation deck with views of the main building. The visitor center offers a unique augmented reality experience that allows visitors to explore the campus using iPads.
