Jean Wactawski-Wende
Jean Wactawski-Wende is an esteemed epidemiologist and academic who is currently serving as the Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Professions at the University at Buffalo. She is known for her extensive research in women's health, particularly in the areas of osteoporosis, breast cancer, and gynecological disorders.
Early Life and Education
Jean Wactawski-Wende was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. She completed her undergraduate studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology. She then pursued a Master's degree in Epidemiology and a Doctorate in Social and Preventive Medicine, both from the same university.
Career
Wactawski-Wende began her career as a research scientist at the New York State Department of Health. She then joined the faculty of the University at Buffalo in 1989, where she has held various positions, including Associate Chair of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, and Interim Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Professions.
In 2015, she was appointed as the Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Professions, a position she currently holds. She is also a Principal Investigator for the Women's Health Initiative, a long-term national health study focused on strategies for preventing heart disease, cancer, and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Research
Wactawski-Wende's research primarily focuses on women's health, with a particular emphasis on the epidemiology of osteoporosis, breast cancer, and gynecological disorders. She has published numerous research articles in these areas and has received several grants to support her work.
