Enterostomal therapist

An enterostomal therapist is a health professional trained in the care of persons with stomas, such as colostomies or urostomies.

Job duties

The enterostomal therapist is usually qualified as an RN (nurse) The typical enterostomal therapist roles may require the following:

• Utilize the nursing process to assess, develop a nursing diagnosis, develop a plan of care of patients with stoma
• Be involved in consulting with other health care providers in making recommendations for care or providing direct care to the ostomy patients
• Serve as a consultant to the physicians and/or staff nurses in regard to ostomy, or wound care

Qualifications

Required qualifications for this position include:

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or higher

• Must be a graduate of an accredited school with a wound ostomy and Continence Program.

• Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse

• Board Certified in wound care

• Board Certified in ostomy care
