Elmhurst is a neighborhood in the borough of Queens, New York City. It is bounded by Jackson Heights to the north, Corona to the east, Rego Park and Middle Village to the south, and Maspeth and Woodside to the west.
History[edit]
Elmhurst was originally known as "Middleburgh" when it was established in 1652 by the Dutch West India Company. The name was changed to "Newtown" in 1664 when the English took over the colony. In 1896, the name was changed to Elmhurst to avoid confusion with other "Newtowns" in the state.
Demographics[edit]
Elmhurst is one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in New York City. It has a large population of Asian, Hispanic, and European residents. The neighborhood is known for its vibrant cultural diversity and is home to many immigrant communities.
Transportation[edit]
Elmhurst is served by several New York City Subway lines, including the E, F, M, and R trains, which stop at the Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue station. The neighborhood is also accessible by several MTA bus routes.
