Microsoft Bing is a web search engine owned and operated by Microsoft. The service has its origins in earlier Microsoft search engines, including MSN Search, Windows Live Search, and Live Search. Bing provides a variety of search services, including web, video, image, and map search products.

History[edit]

Bing was unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on May 28, 2009, at the All Things Digital conference in San Diego, California, and was fully operational on June 3, 2009, replacing Live Search.

Features[edit]

Bing is known for its background images, which change daily and often feature places, animals, sports, people, and more. Bing also offers a variety of features, including:

  • Bing Rewards: A program that allows users to earn points for searching with Bing, which can be redeemed for gift cards and other rewards.
  • Bing Maps: A mapping service that provides directions, traffic information, and local business search.
  • Bing News: A news aggregator that provides the latest news from various sources.
  • Bing Video: A video search service that allows users to search for and view videos from various sources.
  • Bing Image Search: A service that allows users to search for images on the web.

Integration with Microsoft Products[edit]

Bing is integrated into several Microsoft products, including the Microsoft Edge web browser and the Windows 10 operating system. It is also the default search engine for Microsoft Office products and the Cortana digital assistant.

Market Share[edit]

As of 2023, Bing is the second largest search engine in the United States, with a market share of approximately 6.5%, behind Google Search.
