Stanford University
Stanford University, officially Leland Stanford Junior University, is a private research university located in Stanford, California. It is known for its academic strength, wealth, proximity to Silicon Valley, and ranking as one of the world's top universities.
History[edit]

Stanford University was founded in 1885 by Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane Stanford, in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who died of typhoid fever at age 15. The university opened its doors on October 1, 1891, with David Starr Jordan as its first president.

The university's founding grant was written in 1885, and the cornerstone was laid in 1887. The campus was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the renowned landscape architect, and the buildings were designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style by Charles Allerton Coolidge.
Academics[edit]
Stanford is organized into seven schools: the School of Humanities and Sciences, the School of Engineering, the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, the Graduate School of Education, the Graduate School of Business, the Law School, and the School of Medicine.
The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees, and is known for its interdisciplinary research and teaching.
Campus[edit]
Stanford's campus is one of the largest in the United States, covering 8,180 acres. It is located in the heart of Silicon Valley, about 37 miles southeast of San Francisco and 20 miles northwest of San Jose.
The campus is home to many notable landmarks, including the Hoover Tower, the Stanford Memorial Church, and the Cantor Arts Center.
Research[edit]
Stanford is a leading research institution, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration. It is home to numerous research centers and institutes, including the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, and the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
Athletics[edit]
Stanford's athletic teams, known as the Stanford Cardinal, compete in the NCAA Division I and the Pac-12 Conference. The university has a strong athletic tradition and has won numerous national championships.
Notable Alumni[edit]
Stanford has produced many notable alumni, including Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States, Sandra Day O'Connor, the first female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, and numerous leaders in business, technology, and academia.
