Artane (Irish: Ard Aidhin
) is a suburb of Dublin, Ireland, situated on the north side of the city. It is part of the Dublin 5 postal district. Artane is bordered by Coolock, Killester, Raheny, and Beaumont.
History
Artane's name is derived from the Irish Ard Aidhin, meaning "height of Aidhin". The area has a rich history, with evidence of settlement dating back to ancient times. During the 19th century, Artane was primarily rural, but it began to develop rapidly with the expansion of Dublin city. One of the most notable historical institutions in Artane was the Artane Industrial School, which was established in 1870 by the Christian Brothers. The school was intended to provide education and vocational training to boys from disadvantaged backgrounds. However, it later became infamous for the abuse that took place there, which has been the subject of numerous investigations and reports.
Geography
Artane is located approximately 5 kilometers north of Dublin city centre. The area is primarily residential, with a mix of housing types including terraced houses, semi-detached houses, and apartment complexes. Artane is well-served by public transport, with several Dublin Bus routes passing through the area.
Amenities
Artane has a range of amenities including schools, shops, and recreational facilities. The Artane Castle Shopping Centre is a major retail hub in the area, offering a variety of stores and services. There are also several parks and green spaces, such as Rockfield Park and St. Anne's Park, which provide recreational opportunities for residents.
Education
Artane is home to several primary and secondary schools, including St. David's CBS, St. John of God National School, and St. Fiachra's Junior and Senior National Schools. These institutions provide education to children from the local community and surrounding areas.
Notable People
- Christy Dignam, lead singer of the band Aslan, is one of the most well-known figures associated with Artane.
- Paul McGrath, former professional footballer, also has connections to the area.
