Protective eyewear

Goggles are forms of protective eyewear that usually enclose or protect the area surrounding the eye in order to prevent particulates, water, or chemicals from striking the eyes. They are used in chemistry laboratories, woodworking, swimming, and various other activities. Goggles are often worn when using power tools such as drills or chainsaws to prevent flying particles from damaging the eyes. They are also used in sports such as swimming and snowboarding to protect the eyes from water and snow, respectively.

Types of Goggles[edit]

There are several types of goggles designed for different purposes:

  • Safety goggles: Used in industrial environments to protect against flying debris, chemical splashes, and other hazards.
  • Swimming goggles: Designed to protect the eyes from chlorine and other chemicals in swimming pools, as well as to improve underwater vision.
  • Ski goggles: Used in winter sports to protect the eyes from snow, wind, and UV radiation.
  • Aviator goggles: Historically used by pilots to protect their eyes from wind and debris.
  • Motorcycle goggles: Worn by motorcyclists to protect their eyes from wind, dust, and insects.

History[edit]

The use of goggles dates back to ancient times when Inuit people used flattened walrus ivory with narrow slits to protect their eyes from the harsh glare of the sun reflecting off the snow. Modern goggles were developed in the early 20th century, with significant advancements during World War I and World War II for use by pilots and soldiers.

Materials[edit]

Goggles are typically made from materials such as polycarbonate, which is known for its high impact resistance and clarity. The straps are usually made from elastic materials to ensure a secure fit.

Design Features[edit]

Modern goggles often include features such as:

  • Anti-fog coatings: To prevent the lenses from fogging up.
  • UV protection: To shield the eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays.
  • Adjustable straps: For a customizable fit.
  • Ventilation: To reduce fogging and increase comfort.
