Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor

The Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor is an award presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). It is given in honor of an actor who has delivered an outstanding performance in a supporting role while working within the film industry. The award was first presented at the 9th Academy Awards ceremony, held in 1937, for performances in films released in 1936.

History[edit]

The category was created following the establishment of the Academy Award for Best Actor and Academy Award for Best Actress categories. The first recipient was Walter Brennan, who won for his role in "Come and Get It" (1936). Brennan went on to win the award three times, a record in this category.

Criteria and Selection Process[edit]

The nominees for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor are selected by the members of the Academy's Actors Branch. The winners are chosen by the entire membership of the Academy. The award is traditionally presented by the previous year's Best Supporting Actress winner.

Notable Winners[edit]
