The University of Wales (Welsh: Prifysgol Cymru ) is a confederal university system in Wales, United Kingdom. Established in 1893, it was the first university in Wales and has played a significant role in the development of higher education in the country.

History

The University of Wales was founded in 1893 as a federal university with three constituent colleges: University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, University College of North Wales, and University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire. In 2007, the University of Wales underwent a major restructuring, leading to the creation of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in 2010, which merged with several other institutions. Despite these changes, the University of Wales continues to exist as a degree-awarding body.
