Goochland County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,045. Its county seat is Goochland.
History[edit]
Goochland County was established in 1728 from Henrico County. It was named for Sir William Gooch, the royal lieutenant governor from 1727 to 1749. The county was the site of several skirmishes during the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War.
Geography[edit]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 290 square miles (750 km²), of which 284 square miles (740 km²) is land and 6 square miles (16 km²) (2.1%) is water. The James River forms the county's southern border.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 24,045 people, 8,000 households, and 6,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 84.6 people per square mile (32.7/km²).
Government and Politics[edit]
Goochland County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors. Each member is elected from one of the county's five districts. The county is part of Virginia's 7th congressional district.
Education[edit]
The county is served by Goochland County Public Schools, which includes Goochland Elementary School, Goochland Middle School, and Goochland High School.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Goochland County is diverse, with sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The county is also home to several wineries and equestrian facilities.
