The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for ocean and Earth science research, education, and public service in the world. It is a division of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
History[edit]
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography was founded in 1903 as the Marine Biological Association of San Diego. It was later renamed the Scripps Institution for Biological Research in 1912, and finally the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1925. The institution was initially funded by Ellen Browning Scripps and E. W. Scripps, who were prominent philanthropists in the San Diego area.
Research[edit]
Scripps Institution of Oceanography conducts research in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including oceanography, marine biology, geophysics, climate science, and earth science. The institution operates a fleet of research vessels, including the R/V Roger Revelle, R/V Sally Ride, and R/V Robert Gordon Sproul, which are used for scientific expeditions around the world.

Scripps offers graduate programs leading to Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in oceanography, marine biology, and earth sciences. The institution also offers undergraduate courses and research opportunities for students at UCSD.

Scripps scientists have made significant contributions to the understanding of the Earth's climate system, the discovery of hydrothermal vents, and the development of remote sensing technologies. Directors[edit]
The current director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography is Margaret Leinen, who has held the position since 2013. Previous directors include Roger Revelle, who played a key role in the establishment of UCSD, and William A. Nierenberg, who served as director from 1965 to 1986.
