Hong Kong Island is an island in the southern part of Hong Kong. It has a population of 1,270,876 and its population density is 16,390/km², as of 2008. The island had a population of about 3,000 inhabitants scattered in a dozen fishing villages when it was occupied by the United Kingdom in 1841 during the First Opium War. The island was ceded to the UK in 1842 under the Treaty of Nanking and the City of Victoria was established on the island by the British Force in honour of Queen Victoria.

Geography

Hong Kong Island is located in the southern part of Hong Kong, separated from Kowloon by Victoria Harbour. The island is known for its steep terrain, with the highest point being Victoria Peak at 552 meters. The northern part of the island is densely populated and is the historical, political, and economic center of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Island is the financial hub of Hong Kong, with many multinational financial institutions having their headquarters in the Central District. The island is also home to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, one of the largest stock exchanges in the world.
