Flatiron District
The Flatiron District is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. It is named after the Flatiron Building, a landmark structure located at 175 Fifth Avenue. The district is bounded by 14th Street to the south, 23rd Street to the north, Park Avenue South to the east, and Sixth Avenue to the west. The Flatiron District overlaps with parts of the Ladies' Mile Historic District and the Madison Square North Historic District.
History[edit]
The Flatiron District's name derives from the iconic Flatiron Building, completed in 1902. The area was originally part of the Ladies' Mile shopping district, which was a prime retail area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The district saw a decline in the mid-20th century but experienced a resurgence in the 1980s and 1990s as new businesses and residents moved in.
Architecture[edit]
The Flatiron District is known for its Beaux-Arts architecture, with many buildings dating back to the early 20th century. Notable structures include the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower, the New York Life Building, and the Appellate Division Courthouse of New York State.
Economy[edit]
The Flatiron District is a hub for technology startups, design firms, and media companies. It is often referred to as part of Silicon Alley, a term used to describe the cluster of high-tech companies in Manhattan. The area is also home to numerous restaurants, cafes, and retail stores.
Parks and Recreation[edit]
The district is adjacent to Madison Square Park, a public park that offers green space, art installations, and events. The park is a popular spot for both residents and visitors and features the original location of the Shake Shack.
Transportation[edit]
The Flatiron District is well-served by public transportation, including several New York City Subway lines. The 23rd Street and 14th Street – Union Square stations provide easy access to the area.
Education[edit]
The district is home to several educational institutions, including the School of Visual Arts and the New York Film Academy. These institutions contribute to the area's vibrant cultural scene.
