It is responsible for enacting laws, approving the budget, and overseeing the government. The Landtag is composed of 25 members who are elected for a four-year term through a system of proportional representation.

History

The Landtag was established in 1818 by Prince Johann I Joseph of Liechtenstein. Initially, it had limited powers and was primarily an advisory body. Over time, its role expanded, particularly after the 1921 constitution, which granted it more legislative authority and a greater role in the governance of the country.

Structure and Function

The Landtag operates under a parliamentary system. It is led by a President of the Landtag, who is elected by the members of the Landtag. The President is responsible for presiding over sessions and representing the Landtag in official matters.

The Landtag has several key functions:

  • **Legislation**: Proposing, debating, and enacting laws.
  • **Budget Approval**: Reviewing and approving the national budget.
  • **Government Oversight**: Monitoring the activities of the government and holding it accountable.

Elections

Members of the Landtag are elected every four years through a system of proportional representation. The country is divided into two electoral districts: Oberland and Unterland. Each district elects a specific number of representatives based on its population.

Committees

The Landtag has several standing committees that focus on specific areas such as finance, foreign affairs, and social issues. These committees play a crucial role in the legislative process by reviewing proposed legislation and making recommendations to the full Landtag.

Sessions

The Landtag meets in regular sessions throughout the year. Extraordinary sessions can be called by the Prince or by a majority of the Landtag members. Sessions are open to the public, and minutes are published to ensure transparency.
