American politician and diplomat



Eric Michael Garcetti (born February 4, 1971) is an American politician and diplomat who served as the 42nd Mayor of Los Angeles from 2013 to 2022. He is currently serving as the 24th United States Ambassador to India, having been appointed by President Joe Biden in 2023.

Early Life and Education

Garcetti was born in Los Angeles, California, to Gil Garcetti, a former Los Angeles County District Attorney, and Sukey Roth. He attended Harvard-Westlake School and later graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of International Affairs. During his time at Columbia, he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

Political Career

Los Angeles City Council

Garcetti was elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 2001, representing the 13th district. He served as the President of the City Council from 2006 to 2012.

Mayor of Los Angeles

Garcetti was elected as the 42nd Mayor of Los Angeles in 2013, succeeding Antonio Villaraigosa. He was re-elected in 2017. During his tenure, Garcetti focused on issues such as homelessness, transportation, and sustainability. He played a significant role in the passage of Measure M, a sales tax increase to fund transportation projects.

United States Ambassador to India

In 2023, Garcetti was appointed as the United States Ambassador to India by President Joe Biden. He succeeded Kenneth Juster in this role.

Personal Life

Garcetti is married to Amy Wakeland, and they have one adopted daughter. He is an avid jazz pianist and photographer. Garcetti has served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserve.
