The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. They are a member of the AFC West division in the National Football League (NFL). The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The team relocated to Kansas City in 1963 and was renamed the Kansas City Chiefs.
History
Founding and Early Years
The franchise was established in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by Lamar Hunt, who was a key figure in the formation of the AFL. The team moved to Kansas City in 1963 and became the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs won three AFL championships in 1962, 1966, and 1969, and were the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game, which later became known as the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl Success
The Chiefs won their first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl IV, defeating the Minnesota Vikings. After a long period of playoff droughts and near-misses, the Chiefs returned to prominence under head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes. They won their second Super Bowl title in Super Bowl LIV by defeating the San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs won their third Super Bowl title in Super Bowl LVII by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles.
