Montour County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 18,136, making it the smallest county by population in Pennsylvania. The county seat is Danville. Montour County is part of the Bloomsburg-Berwick, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History[edit]

Montour County was created on May 3, 1850, from part of Columbia County. It was named in honor of Andrew Montour, a prominent Métis interpreter and negotiator in colonial Pennsylvania.

Geography[edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 132 square miles (340 km²), of which 130 square miles (340 km²) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²) (1.6%) is water. The county is part of the Appalachian Mountain region.

As of the census of 2020, there were 18,136 people, 7,353 households, and 4,800 families residing in the county. The population density was 139 people per square mile (54/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of other races.

Montour County is governed by a board of three county commissioners. The county is part of Pennsylvania's 11th congressional district.

Education[edit]

Montour County is served by the Danville Area School District. Higher education institutions in the area include the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine.

The economy of Montour County is diverse, with significant contributions from healthcare, manufacturing, and agriculture. The Geisinger Health System is a major employer in the region.
