Houston County, Tennessee

Houston County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,283. Its county seat is Erin. The county was founded in 1871 and named for Sam Houston, a prominent figure in the history of Texas and a former governor of Tennessee.

History

Houston County was established in 1871 from parts of Humphreys, Montgomery, and Stewart counties. The county was named in honor of Sam Houston, who was a key leader in the Texas Revolution and served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 207 square miles (540 km²), of which 200 square miles (520 km²) is land and 6.7 square miles (17 km²) (3.2%) is water. The county is part of the Nashville Metropolitan Area.

As of the 2020 census, there were 8,283 people, 3,329 households, and 2,276 families residing in the county. The population density was 41 people per square mile (16/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 94.5% White, 2.1% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.
