Hanover County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 109,979. Its county seat is Hanover Courthouse. Hanover County is part of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Hanover County was created in 1720 from the area of New Kent County. The county is named for the Elector of Hanover, who became King George I of Great Britain in 1714. The county has a rich history, including its role in the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 474 square miles (1,230 km²), of which 469 square miles (1,215 km²) is land and 5 square miles (13 km²) (1.1%) is water.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 109,979 people, 39,200 households, and 30,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 234 people per square mile (90/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 85.6% White, 9.2% Black or African American, 1.5% Asian, and 3.7% from other races.

Government and Politics

Hanover County is governed by a Board of Supervisors, consisting of seven members elected from each of the county's seven districts. The county is part of Virginia's 1st congressional district.

Education

Hanover County Public Schools operates public schools in the county. The county is also home to several private schools and is in proximity to higher education institutions in the Richmond area.
