American actor, comedian, and musician (1949–1982)



John Adam Belushi (January 24, 1949 – March 5, 1982) was an American actor, comedian, and musician. He was one of the seven original cast members of the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL). Belushi was known for his energetic and intense performances, particularly his characters on SNL and his role in the film Animal House.

Early Life

John Belushi was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Albanian immigrants. He grew up in the Chicago suburb of Wheaton. Belushi attended Wheaton Central High School, where he met his future wife, Judith Jacklin. He later attended the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater and College of DuPage.

Career

Early Career

Belushi began his career in the Second City comedy troupe in Chicago. He gained national fame when he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1975. His notable characters included Samurai Futaba, Joe Cocker impersonations, and the Blues Brothers with fellow cast member Dan Aykroyd.

Film Career

Belushi's film career took off with his role as John "Bluto" Blutarsky in the 1978 comedy Animal House. He went on to star in several other films, including 1941, The Blues Brothers, and Neighbors.

Music Career

Belushi was also a talented musician. He and Dan Aykroyd formed the Blues Brothers band, which became a successful recording and touring act. The band released several albums and starred in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers.

Personal Life

Belushi married Judith Jacklin in 1976. He was the older brother of actor Jim Belushi. Despite his professional success, Belushi struggled with substance abuse, which ultimately led to his untimely death.

Death

John Belushi died on March 5, 1982, in Los Angeles, California, from a drug overdose. His death was a significant loss to the entertainment industry, and he is remembered as one of the most influential comedians of his time.

Legacy

Belushi's work on Saturday Night Live and his films have left a lasting impact on comedy and popular culture. He was posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2004.
