Huambo is a city in Angola, located in the central part of the country. It is the capital of Huambo Province and is one of the largest cities in Angola. The city is situated at an elevation of 1,720 meters above sea level and has a population of approximately 665,564 as of 2014.

History

Huambo was founded in 1912 during the period of Portuguese Angola. It was originally named Nova Lisboa (New Lisbon) in honor of the capital of Portugal, Lisbon. The city was an important administrative and commercial center during the colonial period. Following Angola's independence from Portugal in 1975, the city was renamed Huambo.

During the Angolan Civil War, Huambo was a significant battleground due to its strategic location. The city suffered extensive damage and its infrastructure was severely affected. Since the end of the civil war in 2002, Huambo has been undergoing reconstruction and development.
