Web browser developed by Apple Inc.

Safari is a web browser developed by Apple Inc. It was first released in 2003 with Mac OS X Panther and has since become the default browser on macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. Safari is known for its speed, energy efficiency, and integration with the Apple ecosystem.

History

Safari was introduced during the Macworld Conference & Expo in January 2003 by Steve Jobs. The browser was initially based on the KHTML rendering engine, which was later forked by Apple to create the WebKit engine. WebKit has since become a widely used engine in other browsers, including Google Chrome.

Features

Safari includes several features designed to enhance the browsing experience:

  • Reader mode: Simplifies web pages for easier reading.
  • iCloud integration: Syncs bookmarks, history, and open tabs across Apple devices.
  • Privacy and security: Includes features like Intelligent Tracking Prevention and sandboxing.
  • Extensions: Supports a variety of browser extensions available through the Mac App Store.

Performance

Safari is optimized for performance on Apple hardware. It is known for its fast page loading times and efficient use of system resources. The browser also supports modern web standards, including HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.

Compatibility

Safari is compatible with macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. It is not officially available for other operating systems, although older versions were once available for Microsoft Windows.

Development

Safari is developed using the WebKit engine, which is an open-source project. Apple contributes to the development of WebKit, and the engine is used by other browsers and applications.
