Stonewall National Monument

Stonewall National Monument is a United States National Monument located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. It encompasses the area surrounding the Stonewall Inn, a site of significant historical importance in the LGBTQ+ rights movement.
History[edit]
The Stonewall National Monument was established on June 24, 2016, by President Barack Obama. The designation commemorates the Stonewall riots of June 28, 1969, which are widely considered a pivotal event in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the United States. The riots began as a response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar, and led to several days of protests and clashes with law enforcement.
Significance[edit]
The Stonewall riots marked a turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, leading to the formation of various advocacy groups such as the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Activists Alliance. The events at Stonewall are commemorated annually with Pride parades around the world.
Location and Features[edit]
The Stonewall National Monument includes the Stonewall Inn, Christopher Park, and the surrounding streets and sidewalks that were the site of the 1969 riots. Christopher Park features several statues and plaques that honor the LGBTQ+ community and its struggle for equality.
Management[edit]
The monument is managed by the National Park Service in partnership with local organizations and the LGBTQ+ community. Efforts are ongoing to preserve the historical integrity of the site and to educate the public about its significance.
