The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is a professional association and the legal certifying body for the practice of family medicine in Canada. Established in 1954, the CFPC is responsible for setting standards for the training, certification, and lifelong education of family physicians in Canada.
History[edit]
The CFPC was founded in 1954 to address the need for a national body to oversee the practice of family medicine in Canada. It was established to ensure that family physicians receive the necessary training and certification to provide high-quality care to patients.
Mission and Objectives[edit]
The mission of the CFPC is to improve the health of Canadians by ensuring high standards of training, certification, and continuing education for family physicians. The CFPC aims to:
- Set standards for the training and certification of family physicians.
- Promote lifelong learning and professional development.
- Advocate for family medicine and primary care.
- Support research in family medicine.
Certification and Training[edit]
The CFPC is responsible for certifying family physicians in Canada. To become certified, physicians must complete a residency program in family medicine and pass the Certification Examination in Family Medicine. The CFPC also offers a Certificate of Added Competence (CAC) in areas such as emergency medicine, palliative care, and care of the elderly.
Continuing Professional Development[edit]
The CFPC provides a framework for continuing professional development (CPD) to ensure that family physicians maintain their skills and knowledge throughout their careers. The Mainpro+ program is the CFPC's CPD tracking system, which allows members to record and report their CPD activities.
Advocacy and Research[edit]
The CFPC advocates for policies that support family medicine and primary care. It works with government bodies, healthcare organizations, and other stakeholders to promote the role of family physicians in the healthcare system. The CFPC also supports research in family medicine through grants and awards.
Membership[edit]
The CFPC has over 40,000 members, including family physicians, residents, and medical students. Membership provides access to a range of benefits, including professional development opportunities, resources, and networking events.
