Article-02

American Poultry Association

The American Poultry Association (APA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of standard-bred poultry in the United States. Founded in 1873, it is the oldest poultry organization in North America. The APA is responsible for publishing the American Standard of Perfection, a comprehensive guide that sets the standards for various breeds of poultry, including chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and guinea fowl.

History[edit]

The APA was established in 1873 in Buffalo, New York, by a group of poultry enthusiasts who recognized the need for standardized guidelines in poultry breeding. The first edition of the American Standard of Perfection was published in 1874, providing detailed descriptions and illustrations of the ideal characteristics for each recognized breed.

Objectives[edit]

The primary objectives of the APA include:

  • Promoting the breeding and exhibition of standard-bred poultry.
  • Educating the public about the benefits and importance of standard-bred poultry.
  • Encouraging the conservation of rare and heritage breeds.
  • Providing resources and support for poultry breeders and exhibitors.

Publications[edit]

The APA publishes several key resources for poultry enthusiasts, including:

  • American Standard of Perfection: The definitive guide to poultry breed standards.
  • Bantam Standard: A similar guide focused on bantam breeds.
  • Poultry Press: A quarterly magazine featuring articles on poultry care, breeding, and exhibition.

Membership[edit]

Membership in the APA is open to anyone with an interest in poultry. Members receive benefits such as access to exclusive publications, discounts on APA events, and the opportunity to participate in APA-sanctioned poultry shows.

Poultry Shows[edit]

The APA sanctions numerous poultry shows across the United States each year. These shows provide a platform for breeders to exhibit their birds, compete for awards, and share knowledge with fellow enthusiasts. The APA also hosts an annual National Show, which is one of the most prestigious events in the poultry exhibition community.
