Land O'Lakes, Inc. is an American member-owned agricultural cooperative based in Arden Hills, Minnesota, focusing on the dairy industry. The cooperative was founded in 1921 and has since grown to become one of the largest producers of butter and cheese in the United States.

History[edit]

Land O'Lakes was established on July 8, 1921, by representatives from 320 cooperative creameries. The goal was to improve the quality of butter and other dairy products and to market them more effectively. The cooperative was initially named the Minnesota Cooperative Creameries Association, but it was later renamed Land O'Lakes in 1924.

Operations[edit]

Land O'Lakes operates in three main business segments: Dairy Foods, Animal Nutrition, and Crop Inputs.

Dairy Foods[edit]

The Dairy Foods segment produces and markets butter, spreads, cheese, and other dairy products. The brand is well-known for its butter, which is sold under the Land O'Lakes brand name.

Animal Nutrition[edit]

The Animal Nutrition segment, known as Purina Animal Nutrition, provides feed for livestock and pets. This segment offers a wide range of products designed to meet the nutritional needs of various animals.

Crop Inputs[edit]

The Crop Inputs segment, known as WinField United, provides seeds, crop protection products, and agronomic services to farmers. This segment helps farmers improve their crop yields and manage their farms more efficiently.

Corporate Structure[edit]

Land O'Lakes is a member-owned cooperative, meaning it is owned by the farmers and agricultural producers who use its products and services. The cooperative structure allows members to share in the profits and have a say in the management of the company.

Community Involvement[edit]

Land O'Lakes is involved in various community and sustainability initiatives. The cooperative supports programs that promote agricultural education, rural development, and environmental stewardship.
