Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! is a 2017 documentary film directed by Morgan Spurlock. It is a sequel to Spurlock's 2004 film Super Size Me. The film explores the ways in which the fast food industry has changed since the original film, with a particular focus on the marketing and production of chicken.

Synopsis[edit]

In Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!, Morgan Spurlock investigates the fast food industry's shift towards healthier-sounding options and the marketing tactics used to promote them. Spurlock decides to open his own fast food restaurant, Holy Chicken!, to reveal the truth behind the "health halo" that many fast food chains use to attract customers. The film delves into the process of raising chickens, the conditions of factory farming, and the deceptive practices used in the food industry.

Production[edit]

The film was produced by Morgan Spurlock's production company, Warrior Poets. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2017. The release of the film was delayed due to allegations of sexual misconduct against Spurlock, but it was eventually distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films.

Themes[edit]

Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! addresses several key themes:

  • The concept of the "health halo" in fast food marketing.
  • The realities of factory farming and its impact on animal welfare.
  • The transparency (or lack thereof) in the food industry.
  • The influence of marketing on consumer choices.

Reception[edit]

The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Some praised Spurlock's engaging and humorous approach to serious issues, while others criticized the film for not offering enough new insights compared to the original Super Size Me.
