Herbert L. Ley Jr.

American physician and public health official
Herbert Leonard Ley Jr. (September 7, 1923 – July 22, 2001) was an American physician and public health official who served as the Commissioner of Food and Drugs from 1968 to 1969. He was known for his efforts to improve the safety and efficacy of pharmaceuticals and food products in the United States.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Herbert L. Ley Jr. was born in Norwalk, Connecticut. He attended Harvard University, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He later received his medical degree from the same institution.
Career[edit]
Ley began his career as a physician and later transitioned into public health. He held various positions before being appointed as the Commissioner of Food and Drugs by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. His tenure continued under President Richard Nixon.
Commissioner of Food and Drugs[edit]
As the Commissioner of Food and Drugs, Ley was responsible for overseeing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). During his tenure, he focused on enhancing the regulatory framework for pharmaceuticals and food products. He advocated for stricter safety standards and more rigorous testing procedures to ensure the well-being of the public.
Ley's tenure was marked by significant challenges, including resistance from the pharmaceutical industry and political pressures. Despite these obstacles, he remained committed to his mission of protecting public health.
Later Life and Death[edit]
After leaving the FDA, Ley continued to work in the field of public health. He passed away on July 22, 2001, in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
