Dave A. Chokshi
Dave A. Chokshi is an American physician and public health official who served as the 43rd New York City Health Commissioner. He was appointed to the position by Bill de Blasio, the Mayor of New York City, and served from August 2020 to March 2022. Chokshi played a significant role in managing the city's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Chokshi was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He attended Harvard University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in biological sciences. He then went on to receive his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Chokshi also holds a Master of Science degree in global public health from the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
Career[edit]
Before his appointment as New York City Health Commissioner, Chokshi held various roles in the field of public health and medicine. He served as the Chief Population Health Officer at OneCity Health, a subsidiary of the New York City Health + Hospitals system. He also worked as a primary care physician at Bellevue Hospital.
Chokshi has been involved in numerous public health initiatives, including efforts to address health disparities and improve access to healthcare for underserved populations. He has also worked with the World Health Organization and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
New York City Health Commissioner[edit]
Chokshi was appointed as the New York City Health Commissioner in August 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the city's public health response, including testing, contact tracing, and vaccination efforts. Chokshi emphasized the importance of equity in the city's pandemic response, focusing on ensuring that vulnerable communities had access to necessary resources.
Under his leadership, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene implemented various initiatives to curb the spread of the virus, including public awareness campaigns and partnerships with community organizations. Chokshi also played a key role in the city's vaccination campaign, which aimed to vaccinate millions of New Yorkers against COVID-19.
Personal Life[edit]
Chokshi is married and has one child. He continues to be an advocate for public health and healthcare equity.
