RTI-121 is a phenyltropane-derived stimulant drug that acts as a potent and selective dopamine reuptake inhibitor. It is structurally related to other phenyltropane compounds such as RTI-55 and RTI-113.

Chemical Structure and Properties[edit]

RTI-121, also known as β-CIT-FE, is a synthetic compound belonging to the phenyltropane class. Its chemical structure is characterized by a tropane ring system with a phenyl group attached to the 3-position and a carboxylate ester at the 2-position. The molecular formula of RTI-121 is C17H21NO2.

Pharmacology[edit]

RTI-121 functions primarily as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, which means it blocks the dopamine transporter (DAT) and prevents the reabsorption of dopamine into presynaptic neurons. This leads to an increase in extracellular dopamine levels, resulting in enhanced dopaminergic neurotransmission. Due to its high selectivity for the dopamine transporter, RTI-121 has been used in scientific research to study the role of dopamine in various physiological and pathological processes.

Research Applications[edit]

RTI-121 has been utilized in neuroscience research to investigate the mechanisms of dopamine-related disorders such as Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and substance abuse. Its ability to selectively inhibit dopamine reuptake makes it a valuable tool for mapping dopamine transporter distribution in the brain using imaging techniques like positron emission tomography (PET).

Legal Status[edit]

The legal status of RTI-121 varies by country. In some jurisdictions, it may be classified as a controlled substance due to its potential for abuse and its similarity to other stimulant drugs.
