Astana (officially known as Nur-Sultan from 2019 to 2022) is the capital city of Kazakhstan. It is located in the northern part of the country, within the Akmola Region. Astana has a population of over one million people, making it the second-largest city in Kazakhstan after Almaty.

History[edit]

Astana was founded in 1830 as a settlement named Akmolinsk. It became a city in 1862. During the Soviet era, the city was renamed Tselinograd in 1961 and served as a center for the Virgin Lands Campaign. After Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991, the city was renamed Akmola. In 1997, the capital of Kazakhstan was moved from Almaty to Akmola, and in 1998, the city was renamed Astana, which means "capital" in Kazakh. In 2019, the city was renamed Nur-Sultan in honor of the first President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev. However, in 2022, the city reverted to its previous name, Astana.
