The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is a labor union representing professional firefighters and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel in the United States and Canada. The IAFF is affiliated with the AFL-CIO in the United States and the Canadian Labour Congress in Canada.

History[edit]

The IAFF was founded on February 28, 1918, in Washington, D.C., with the goal of improving the working conditions and safety of firefighters. The union has grown significantly since its inception, now representing over 320,000 members in more than 3,500 affiliates.

Structure[edit]

The IAFF is governed by a General President, a General Secretary-Treasurer, and a 16-member Executive Board. The Executive Board is composed of vice presidents representing the union's 16 districts, which are divided geographically across the United States and Canada.

Objectives[edit]

The primary objectives of the IAFF include:

  • Advocating for better wages, benefits, and working conditions for its members.
  • Promoting the health and safety of firefighters and EMS personnel.
  • Providing training and education to enhance the skills and knowledge of its members.
  • Supporting legislation that benefits firefighters and public safety.

Programs and Services[edit]

The IAFF offers a variety of programs and services to its members, including:

  • The IAFF Financial Corporation, which provides financial services and products.
  • The IAFF Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery, which offers specialized care for firefighters dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other behavioral health issues.
  • The IAFF Charitable Foundation, which supports members and their families in times of need.

Political and Legislative Activities[edit]

The IAFF is actively involved in political and legislative activities at the local, state, and federal levels. The union endorses and supports candidates who advocate for the interests of firefighters and public safety. The IAFF also lobbies for legislation that improves the working conditions, health, and safety of its members.

Training and Education[edit]

The IAFF provides extensive training and education programs through its IAFF Fire Ground Survival Program, IAFF HazMat Training, and other initiatives. These programs are designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of firefighters and EMS personnel, ensuring they are well-prepared to handle various emergency situations.

Health and Safety[edit]

The IAFF is committed to the health and safety of its members. The union conducts research and advocates for policies that reduce the risks associated with firefighting and emergency medical services. The IAFF also provides resources and support for members dealing with occupational illnesses and injuries.

Membership[edit]

Membership in the IAFF is open to professional firefighters and EMS personnel in the United States and Canada. Members benefit from the union's collective bargaining efforts, training programs, and various support services.
