Winter sports are recreational or competitive activities that are played on snow or ice. These sports are typically enjoyed during the winter season when natural ice and snow are available, although artificial ice and snow can also be used. Winter sports are popular in regions with cold climates and are a significant part of the Winter Olympic Games.

Types of Winter Sports[edit]

Winter sports can be broadly categorized into two types: ice sports and snow sports.

Ice Sports[edit]

  • Ice hockey: A team sport played on an ice rink where players use sticks to hit a puck into the opponent's goal.
  • Figure skating: A sport in which individuals, duos, or groups perform on figure skates on ice.
  • Speed skating: A competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors race each other in traveling a certain distance on skates.
  • Curling: A sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice towards a target area segmented into four concentric circles.

Snow Sports[edit]

  • Skiing: A sport in which participants use skis to glide on snow. It includes various disciplines such as alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and freestyle skiing.
  • Snowboarding: A sport that involves descending a snow-covered slope on a snowboard attached to a rider's feet.
  • Sledding: A recreational activity and competitive sport in which a person rides a sled down a snow-covered hill.
  • Bobsleigh: A team sport in which teams make timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked, ice tracks in a gravity-powered sled.
