History

Harris Teeter was founded in 1936 by Willis L. Teeter and W.T. Harris. The first store was opened in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company grew steadily over the years, expanding its presence throughout the southeastern United States.

In 2014, Harris Teeter was acquired by The Kroger Company, one of the largest supermarket chains in the United States. Despite the acquisition, Harris Teeter continues to operate under its own banner and maintains its headquarters in Matthews, North Carolina.
