Nepal Medical Council (NMC) is the regulatory authority responsible for overseeing the medical profession in Nepal. It was established to ensure the quality of medical education and the ethical practice of medicine in the country. The council is tasked with maintaining the standards of medical practice, accrediting medical institutions, and registering medical practitioners.

History[edit]

The Nepal Medical Council was established in 1964 under the Nepal Medical Council Act. The primary objective of the council is to regulate the medical profession and ensure that medical practitioners adhere to the highest standards of medical ethics and practice.

Functions[edit]

The main functions of the Nepal Medical Council include:

  • Accreditation of medical colleges and institutions.
  • Registration of medical practitioners.
  • Monitoring and maintaining the standards of medical education.
  • Ensuring the ethical practice of medicine.
  • Conducting examinations for foreign medical graduates seeking to practice in Nepal.

Registration[edit]

The NMC is responsible for the registration of medical practitioners in Nepal. Medical graduates from recognized institutions must register with the council to legally practice medicine in the country. The council also conducts licensing examinations for foreign medical graduates.

Accreditation[edit]

The council accredits medical colleges and institutions in Nepal to ensure they meet the required standards of medical education. This includes regular inspections and evaluations of the institutions.

Ethical Standards[edit]

The Nepal Medical Council sets and enforces ethical standards for medical practitioners. It has the authority to take disciplinary action against practitioners who violate these standards.

Examinations[edit]

The NMC conducts licensing examinations for foreign medical graduates who wish to practice in Nepal. These examinations assess the knowledge and skills of the candidates to ensure they meet the required standards.
