Homi Jehangir Bhabha 1960s

Homi J. Bhabha (1909–1966) was an Indian nuclear physicist known for his contributions to the development of nuclear energy in India. He is often referred to as the Father of the Indian nuclear program.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Homi Jehangir Bhabha was born on October 30, 1909, in Bombay, British India. He completed his early education in Bombay before moving to England for further studies. Bhabha pursued his higher education at the University of Cambridge where he obtained a degree in mechanical engineering.

Career[edit]

Bhabha's interest in nuclear physics led him to work with renowned scientists such as Niels Bohr and Wolfgang Pauli. He made significant contributions to the field of nuclear physics and played a crucial role in establishing India's nuclear research program.

In 1944, Bhabha founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Bombay, which became a leading center for scientific research in India. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Atomic Energy Commission of India in 1948.

Bhabha's vision and leadership were instrumental in shaping India's nuclear energy program. He advocated for the peaceful use of nuclear energy and emphasized the importance of scientific research for the development of the country.
