Kenneth Flex Wheeler (born August 23, 1965) is an American IFBB professional bodybuilder. He is often referred to as one of the greatest bodybuilders ever, despite not winning the Mr. Olympia title. Wheeler won the Arnold Classic a record four times and was renowned for his combination of size, symmetry, and conditioning.

Early Life

Kenneth Wheeler was born in Fresno, California. He had a turbulent childhood and faced numerous challenges, including bouts of child abuse and poverty. Despite these hardships, Wheeler found solace and a sense of purpose in bodybuilding, a sport he excelled in from an early age.

Bodybuilding Career

Flex Wheeler's bodybuilding career is marked by numerous achievements. He won the NPC (National Physique Committee) Mr. California title in 1989 and turned professional by winning the IFBB USA Championships in 1992. Wheeler's professional debut was at the IFBB Night of Champions in 1993, where he placed second.

Wheeler's most notable victories include winning the Arnold Classic in 1993, 1997, 1998, and 2000. Despite his success at the Arnold Classic, the Mr. Olympia title eluded him. He placed second three times (1993, 1998, and 1999) in this prestigious competition. Wheeler was known for his aesthetic physique, which combined muscular mass with symmetry and definition. His rivalry with fellow bodybuilders like Ronnie Coleman and Dorian Yates was legendary, contributing to the golden era of bodybuilding in the 1990s.

Health Issues and Retirement

Flex Wheeler faced significant health challenges throughout his career. He was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a form of kidney disease, which led to a kidney transplant in 2003. This health issue, among others, contributed to his decision to retire from competitive bodybuilding.

In 2019, Wheeler underwent surgery to amputate part of his right leg due to circulation issues. Despite these challenges, Wheeler has remained active in the bodybuilding community, serving as a mentor and coach to upcoming athletes.

Legacy

Flex Wheeler is often celebrated for his contributions to bodybuilding, not just for his competitive achievements but also for his resilience in the face of adversity. He is considered one of the sport's most influential figures, inspiring bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts worldwide. Wheeler's physique is frequently cited as one of the most aesthetically pleasing in the history of the sport, embodying the ideal blend of muscle size, symmetry, and conditioning.
