Newham was established on April 1, 1965, by the merger of the former boroughs of West Ham and East Ham, within the framework of the London Government Act 1963. This act aimed to create a more efficient administrative structure for Greater London. The borough covers an area of approximately 36.22 square kilometers (13.98 square miles), making it one of the smaller boroughs in London by area.
