NatureServe is a non-profit organization that provides high-quality scientific expertise for conservation. Its mission is to provide the scientific basis for effective conservation action. NatureServe and its network of over 80 natural heritage programs and conservation data centers across the Americas form an essential resource for understanding the specific locations and conditions of species and ecosystems. NatureServe's work supports critical conservation planning by governments, industry, and conservation organizations.

History[edit]

NatureServe has its roots in the United States with the establishment of the first state natural heritage program in 1974. These programs were initially developed to systematically collect and analyze data on endangered species and threatened ecosystems. The Nature Conservancy created NatureServe in 2000 as an independent organization to expand upon and to coordinate the efforts of the natural heritage network.

Mission and Work[edit]

The core mission of NatureServe is to provide the scientific foundation for conservation efforts across the Americas. This mission is achieved through the collection, analysis, and dissemination of standardized conservation information on plants, animals, and ecosystems. NatureServe focuses on species and ecosystems that are rare or declining and provides tools and data that help in making informed conservation decisions.

Data and Tools[edit]

NatureServe offers a range of tools and data products for conservation planning and assessment, including:

  • NatureServe Explorer: An online database that provides information on more than 70,000 plants, animals, and ecosystems in the United States and Canada.
  • Biotics: A biodiversity database management system used by the NatureServe network and partners to manage, analyze, and share conservation information.
  • Conservation Status Assessments: NatureServe assesses the conservation status of species and ecosystems using a methodology that evaluates their risk of extinction or elimination.
  • Ecosystem Classification and Mapping: NatureServe develops detailed classifications and maps of ecosystems to support conservation planning and resource management.

Impact[edit]

NatureServe's work has a significant impact on conservation efforts by providing data that is critical for identifying conservation priorities, informing policy and land management decisions, and guiding the allocation of conservation funding. Its data and tools are used by a wide range of stakeholders, including government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, and the private sector.

Challenges and Future Directions[edit]

One of the main challenges facing NatureServe is the need for ongoing funding to support its extensive data collection and analysis efforts. Additionally, as the climate changes and human impacts on natural environments increase, there is a growing need for updated and more comprehensive data on species and ecosystems. NatureServe continues to innovate in response to these challenges, developing new tools and approaches for conservation planning and assessment in a changing world.
