Northwest Territories (NWT) is one of the three federal territories of Canada. Located in the northern part of the country, it is bordered by Yukon to the west, Nunavut to the east, the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan to the south, and the Arctic Ocean to the north. The region is known for its vast landscapes, including forests, mountains, and thousands of lakes. The capital and largest city is Yellowknife.

History

The area now known as the Northwest Territories has been inhabited for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples including the Dene, Inuit, and Métis. European exploration began in the 16th century, but it was not until the 18th century that the territory became a significant area of interest for fur trade companies such as the Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company.
