University of North Dakota (UND) is a public university located in Grand Forks, North Dakota, United States. Established in 1883, six years before the state itself was admitted to the Union, UND is the oldest and largest university in North Dakota. With a strong emphasis on research, liberal arts, and health sciences, the university offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs through its various colleges and schools.

History[edit]

The University of North Dakota was founded by the Dakota Territorial Assembly in 1883, at a time when the future state of North Dakota was still a part of the Dakota Territory. The university opened its doors on September 8, 1884, with a class of eight students and two faculty members. Over the years, UND has grown significantly, both in terms of its physical campus and its academic offerings.

The UND campus spans over 550 acres in the heart of Grand Forks. It is known for its beautiful green spaces, modern facilities, and historic buildings, such as the iconic Gothic-style Merrifield Hall. The campus is divided into several sections, including the main academic and residential areas, the aviation and aerospace complex, and the athletic facilities.

Academic Programs[edit]

UND offers more than 225 fields of study, including over 90 undergraduate majors, more than 70 master's degree programs, and over 25 doctoral programs. The university is particularly renowned for its John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, which is considered one of the top aviation and aerospace schools in the world. Other notable colleges and schools within the university include the College of Business & Public Administration, the School of Medicine & Health Sciences, and the College of Engineering & Mines.

The university's research efforts are focused on areas such as energy and environmental protection, health and wellness, and aerospace. UND is home to several research centers and institutes, including the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) and the Rural Health Research Center.

Student Life[edit]

Student life at UND is vibrant and diverse, with over 275 student organizations, including academic clubs, cultural organizations, sports clubs, and Greek life. The university also offers a wide range of campus events and activities, from concerts and lectures to athletic events. UND's athletic teams, known as the Fighting Hawks, compete in the NCAA Division I, particularly in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference for men's and women's hockey.
