The phosphorus cycle is a biogeochemical cycle that describes the movement of phosphorus through the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. After the death of an organism, phosphorus is returned to the soil or sediment through decomposition, completing the cycle. Human activities, such as agriculture and industry, have significantly altered the phosphorus cycle. The use of phosphorus-based fertilizers increases the amount of phosphorus in the soil, which can lead to runoff and eutrophication of water bodies, causing algal blooms and dead zones. Additionally, mining of phosphate rocks for fertilizer production depletes non-renewable phosphorus resources.
