University College Hospital

University College Hospital (UCH) is a teaching hospital located in London, United Kingdom. It is part of the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is closely associated with University College London (UCL).

History

The hospital was established in 1834, following the foundation of University College London in 1826. It was originally located on the site of the former North London Hospital, but moved to its current location on Euston Road in the Bloomsbury area of Central London in 2005.

Facilities

University College Hospital has over 600 inpatient beds, 12 operating theatres, and a state-of-the-art accident & emergency department. The hospital also houses the Macmillan Cancer Centre, which opened in April 2012.

Services

The hospital provides a full range of medical and surgical specialties. These include cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, and cancer services. The hospital is also a major centre for medical research and teaching, with close ties to the UCL Medical School.

Notable people

Several notable figures in the field of medicine have been associated with University College Hospital. These include Joseph Lister, the pioneer of antiseptic surgery, and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, the first woman to qualify as a physician and surgeon in Britain.
