Famprofazone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and analgesic. It is most commonly used in the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and acute gout. Famprofazone is also used to relieve mild to moderate pain from headache, toothache, menstrual cramps, and muscle aches.

Pharmacology

Famprofazone belongs to the class of drugs known as pyrazolones. It works by reducing the production of prostaglandins, chemicals that cause inflammation, pain, and fever in the body. Famprofazone also has a weak antiplatelet effect, which can help to prevent blood clots.

Side Effects

Common side effects of famprofazone include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach upset. Less common but more serious side effects can include gastric ulcer, bleeding, and kidney damage.

Contraindications

Famprofazone is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to pyrazolones, patients with active peptic ulcer disease, and patients with severe liver disease or kidney disease. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of heart disease or stroke.

Interactions

Famprofazone may interact with other drugs such as anticoagulants, corticosteroids, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), increasing the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. It may also interact with alcohol, increasing the risk of stomach bleeding.

Availability

Famprofazone is available in many countries under various brand names. However, it is not approved for use in some countries, including the United States, due to concerns about its safety and effectiveness.
