Pêra Rocha

Pêra Rocha is a unique variety of pear native to Portugal. It is named after the town of Rocha, where it was first cultivated. The Pêra Rocha is distinguished by its unique characteristics, including its bright yellow color with a slight red blush, crisp texture, and sweet, slightly acidic flavor.

History[edit]

The Pêra Rocha was first discovered in 1836 in the gardens of a monastery in Sintra, Portugal. The variety was propagated by a local farmer named Pedro António Rocha, from whom the pear gets its name. The Pêra Rocha quickly gained popularity in Portugal and is now one of the country's most important fruit exports.

Cultivation[edit]

Pêra Rocha trees thrive in the temperate climate of western Portugal. The trees require well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. The pears are typically harvested in late summer and early fall. Pêra Rocha pears have a long shelf life, which makes them ideal for export.

Uses[edit]

Pêra Rocha pears are enjoyed fresh, but they are also used in a variety of culinary applications. They are often used in salads, desserts, and as a complement to cheese. In Portugal, they are also used to make a traditional pear liqueur.

Economic Impact[edit]

The Pêra Rocha is a significant part of Portugal's agricultural economy. The country exports millions of kilograms of the fruit each year, primarily to Brazil, Morocco, and the United Kingdom. The Pêra Rocha has been granted Protected Designation of Origin status by the European Union, which means that only pears grown in certain regions of Portugal can be sold under the name Pêra Rocha.
