Estradiol benzoate cyclooctenyl ether

0Estradiol benzoate cyclooctenyl ether (EBCOE) is a synthetic, steroidal estrogen that was never marketed. It is an estrogen ether – specifically, an ether of estradiol benzoate. EBCOE is a long-acting estrogen, and has a prolonged duration of action relative to that of estradiol and its esters like estradiol benzoate.

Chemistry[edit]

Estradiol benzoate cyclooctenyl ether, also known as EBCOE, is a synthetic estrane steroid and a derivative of estradiol. It is more specifically a derivative of estradiol benzoate, which itself is an estradiol ester and hence a derivative of estradiol. EBCOE is an estrogen ether, or a derivative of an estrogen that has an ether group. It is a long-acting estrogen due to the presence of its cyclooctenyl ether group, which slows its metabolic clearance.

Pharmacology[edit]

As an estrogen, EBCOE has estrogenic effects. It interacts with the estrogen receptor, a type of nuclear receptor, in order to produce its effects. The medication has a prolonged duration of action relative to that of estradiol and estradiol benzoate due to its cyclooctenyl ether group, which serves to slow its metabolism and extend its duration of action.

History[edit]

EBCOE was developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, but was never marketed. The medication was found to have a prolonged duration of action relative to that of estradiol and estradiol benzoate, but was not further developed.
