Toronto is the most populous city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario. It is located in Southern Ontario on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. With over 2.7 million residents, it is the fourth most populous city in North America.

History

Toronto's history dates back to indigenous settlements in the region approximately 12,000 years ago. The city was officially established in 1793 by the British as the town of York. It was renamed Toronto in 1834.

Geography

Toronto covers an area of 630.2 square kilometers and is bordered by Lake Ontario to the south, Etobicoke Creek and Highway 427 to the west, Steeles Avenue to the north, and the Rouge River to the east.

Economy

Toronto is an international centre for business and finance. It has a high concentration of banks and brokerage firms on Bay Street, in the Financial District. The Toronto Stock Exchange is the world's seventh-largest stock exchange by market capitalization.

Culture

Toronto is known for its many museums, including the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Ontario Science Centre. The city also hosts numerous festivals throughout the year, such as the Toronto International Film Festival and the Toronto Caribbean Carnival.

Education

Toronto is home to several universities, including the University of Toronto, York University, and Ryerson University. It also has a number of colleges, including George Brown College, Seneca College, and Humber College.

Transportation

Toronto is served by a variety of transportation options, including the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), which operates bus, subway, and streetcar routes throughout the city. The city is also served by GO Transit, which provides regional bus and train services, and Metrolinx, which operates the Union Pearson Express train service to Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Sports

Toronto is home to several professional sports teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL), the Toronto Raptors (NBA), the Toronto Blue Jays (MLB), and the Toronto FC (MLS).
